1. What is Chatmosphere

    1.1 The Chatmosphere chatroom database
The Chatmosphere chatroom database is compiled from a list of IRC (Internet Relay Chat) servers that is updated nightly. With almost 100.000 rooms indexed, you will find well in excess of a million people chatting at any hour of the day.
1.2 The Chatmosphere IRC for Blackberry® application
The Chatmosphere Blackberry application lets you connect to all these chatrooms from your Blackberry handset. Connect will people from all over the word and chat about almost any topic you can think of.

2. Choosing a Chatroom

    2.1 The random chatroom list
On the home screen on the app there is a random list of popular chatrooms. The selection of chatrooms that are in this list is fed from our database and updated regulary. You can refresh the list by clicking on the image.
    2.2 Searching the chatroom database
To search the database for a room, type in your query in the search box and hit the search button (or press enter). The search script matches the chatroom name and description for your search string. For maximum results, keep your search words simple or use partial words. Example: Searching for 'chat' will match usa-chat and chatroom. By default, the search is limited to rooms that have less than 200 users in them. This is because these busy rooms slow down the app on your blackberry. To include these busy rooms, tick the checkbox under the search box.

3. In the chatroom

    3.1 Your nickname
Your nickname is the name other people see when you send a nessage to the room. By default, you get a random generated chatname like 'Chat1234' but you can change this to whatever you want from the 'Options' screen before a chat or by pressing the menu key during a chat session. Note that setting your nickname to inappropriate values will probably get you kicked out of most chatrooms.
3.2 Sending messages to the chatroom
To send a message to the chatroom you are in, type into the input box at the bottom and press the send button (or your enter key). You can choose the color of your text by clicking the desired color on the selection box. Note that just like with inappropriate nickname, sending rude or insulting messages might get you kicked from a chatroom.
    3.3 Private chat windows
You can send private messages to individuals you see in the room by clicking their name in the userlist on the right. This will open up another tabbed chat window with just you and the other chatter. Note that not all people that are in a room are actually at their computers at the time so don't be disappointed if someone doesn't reply ;).
    3.4 Blocking annoying chatters
If someone annoys you or keeps sending you unwanted messages, you can block them by clicking their name in the userlist on the right and clicking 'Block users'. This will prevent that person to send any more messages to you.
    3.6 Command-line shortcuts
To use the command-line shortcuts - type any of the below in the messagebox and click the 'Send' button or type 'enter'.

      3.6.1 /join or /j
This shortcut allows you to join a channel. Usage: "/join channel" or "/j channel". Example: "/j #help".
      3.6.2 /quit or /q
Use this shortcut to quit your current chatsession. Usage: "/quit" or "/q".
      3.6.3 /msg
Shortcut to send a message to another user or channel. Usage: "/msg user|channel message". Example: "/msg annie hey there" will send a message to the user annie if she is on the same chatserver as you. "/msg #help hey there" will send a message to the channel '#help' if there is such a channel on your current server.
      3.6.4 /me
/me {action text} Sends the specifed action to the active channel or chat window. Usage: "/me message". Example: "/me says hello" will print on the active window: "* yournick says hello" in blue fonts.
      3.6.5 /whois
Shows information about another chatter. Usage: "/whois nickname". Example: "/whois annie" will show where annie is logged in from, on what server and what other chatrooms she is logged on to.
      3.6.6 /nickserv
Some (most) IRC networks run a service called 'NICKSERV' that allows you to register your nickname so no one else can use it. This is useful when you don't want other people to chat in your name or to enter chatrooms that only allow chatters with registered nicks. For a full reference on the NICKSERV command have a google. Here is a link of a NickServ help page. Remember to use the '/nickserv' or the '/msg nickserv' command and not the '/quote nickserv' one.

        Examples:
        • To register a nickname:
          /nickserv REGISTER password email

        • Log in with a nickname:
          /nickserv IDENTIFY

        • Help on a NickServ command:
          /nickserv command help

If these commands don't work, check whether the server you're on even supports NickServ and if so, consult the help pages of the network.

    4. Options

      4.1 Your nickname
Your nickname is the name other people see when you send a nessage to the room. By default, you get a random generated chatname like 'Chat1234' but you can change this to whatever you want from the 'Options' screen before a chat or by pressing the menu key during a chat session. Note that setting your nickname to inappropriate values will probably get you kicked out of most chatrooms.
      4.2 Disconnect timeout
By default the app will exit a chat session if it is in the background for more than 3 minutes. This is to save battery and limit data usage. You can change this from the options screen to 5, 15, 30, 60 minutes or disable the timeout alltogether. Note that your battery will go flat really quickly when you disable this.
4.3 Vibrate alerts on missed messages
You can get the app to alert you by buzzing if it's in the background and there is a new message in the chatroom you have open (or when you get a private message). THis is off by default.
4.4 Sound alerts on missed messages
You can get the app to alert you by beeping if it's in the background and there is a new message in the chatroom you have open (or when you get a private message). THis is off by default.
      4.5 Show/Hide server messages
You can enable/disable the output of server messages in a chat session. Most people aren't interested in these messages but some users might find it useful if they are having problems connecting to a certain server/chatroom. this is off by default.

    5. Frequently Asked Questions

5.1 Why do I get a "connection timeout" or "connection lost" message ?
The Chatmosphere chatroom database indexes chatrooms on hundreds of different servers all over the world. Although the availability of these servers gets checked every night when the database gets refreshed, there are various reasons why one of them can be temporarily unavailable. If it happens to you, pick a chatroom on another chatroom and try again a bit later. It is also possible the server is temporarily blocking connections for some reason (like too many connections or something). You could try enabling server messages to get more info on why the server is not letting you connect.
5.2 I need a "Registered nickname" to join some channels ?
Some chatrooms only allow users with a registered nickname. To register a nickname you have to use the '/nickserv' command. (See command-line options) Once registered, log into another chatroom on the same server, identify yourself with nickserv and join the chatroom you want to enter or create yourself a manual connection profile that will log you in automatically.
5.3 Why is no one saying anything ?
Some chatrooms have 100's of users online but no one seems to say anything. These are what is called 'idlers' - Some networks have lots of these rooms, others don't. Just look around for another chatroom or pick a one from a 3-star   server like 'irc.icq.com'.
5.4 Why is the app really slow sometimes ?
If you join channels with a very large number of users or if you open too many chatrooms at the same time, the app will start reacting slow. this is because of the the app having to process the large amount of text coming in and going out. Try to pick rooms with less than 300 users and don't open too many chatrooms in one session.
